The Skyline GT-R comes from humble beginnings, starting in 1969 with the PGC10, launched alongside the Nissan R380 race car. The five generations of Skyline GT-R that followed were the R32, R33 and R34 models. These coupes were distinguished by their RB26 powerplants. These straight-six engines could withstand the most extreme modifications and some even reached 1,000 horsepower!

Either Paul Walker’s R34 was a movie or you were a fan of the original Gran Turismo games. Both of these models were championed by Nissan Skyline GT-R R34. Nissan’s halo product became notoriously famous during the ’90s.RELATED: These Are The 10 Most Legendary Nissan Skylines Ever9

The Original Nissan GT-R R35

WikimediaAfter ending production of the Skyline R34 in 2002, Nissan took five years to develop the successor we see today. Launching in 2007, the original R35 was the first GT-R to drop the Skyline moniker, becoming known simply as the “GT-R” – the result was an astonishing feat of engineering.

Nissan’s R34 successor arrived, producing 473 hp with 432 lb-ft of torque. The hand-built VR38DETT V6 which replaced the legendary RB26 was able to take it from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The GT-R was used by Nissan to destroy the Porsche 911 turbo. It took on Laguna Seca and even set a Nurburgring record of 7:38. Nissan had created an electronic marvel that used electronic assistance to defeat all its competitors. It was also very affordable at $70,000 back then. The R35 we see today was in production since 2007. The question is, how much has changed in sixteen years?

The Borg-Warner six speed auto has been improved over the years to allow drivers to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The GT-R sports three driver modes: Normal, Comfort, and R, all of which manipulate the trick suspension setup to apply pressure to those Bilstein DampTronic shocks.

What’s more, is the Nismo package. You can add the turbocharger to the GT3 car to increase your output to 600 hp or 487 lb-ft. The Nismo trim level is motorsport derived with all the added carbon fiber to help lighten the load, including a lighter transmission and a quicker 0-62 mph time of 2.5 seconds.

The Nissan GT-R Is A Technical Marvel

NissanThe R35 GT-R arrived with enough computing power to raise the titanic. The GT-R distributes torque through the ATTESA E-TS four-wheel-drive system using formulas and algorithms. The GT-R also provides exceptional grip thanks to its Dunlop tires and constant manipulation of the electronic throttle. This limits slip across all four corners. However, you can tune the R35. However, many critiqued it for its lack of analog personality. Still, the truth is most manufacturers now operate far more complex systems, likely due to the trailblazing GT-R’s lasting prowess.

Model Lineup

usa.nissannews.comIn 2023, the R35 GT-R comes with two trim levels, the GT-R Premium and the Nismo package. The premium model comes standard with the twin-turbo V6, titanium exhaust, and a set of Brembo-equipped brakes from Nissan. The interior features heated Recaro sports seats with Nappa inserts and Recaro leather inserts. The Nismo package, which is motorsport-inspired, features Apple CarPlay software and Bose surround speakers. Customers also get a lighter package that includes carbon fiber panels such as the roof. Brembo also supplied a set carbon ceramic brakes to increase the vehicle’s torsional rigidity. Unfortunately, the GT-R Nismo comes at a vastly inflated price over the premium package.
