This will impact an estimated 100,000 people in five boroughs.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that every Uber or Lyft vehicle in New York must have zero emissions by 2030, according to TheVerge. It should not be surprising that NYC is moving to all-electric ridesharing. NYC is the largest city for ridesharing, with over 100,000 vehicles available for hire.

Paul Augustine, Lyft director of sustainability, stated in a statement that Lyft is excited to partner with New York City for this journey. “New York’s commitment to electric will accelerate an equitable citywide transition to electric, we are eager to collaborate with TLC on an ambitious plan to create a rideshare clean miles standard. “

The city has already plans to electrify its own vehicles and to expand its charging infrastructure across the five boroughs. NYC’s Taxi and Limousine Commission is responsible for implementing the plan. It also regulates Uber and Lyft. How do these two companies feel about the Adams decision?

“We applaud the Mayor’s ambition for reducing emissions, an important goal we share,” Josh Gold, senior director of policy at Uber. “Uber has made real progress in becoming the first zero-emissions mobility platform for North America. But there is still much to do. “

This comes at a perfect time for Uber. Uber announced plans last September to make its entire North American and European ride-sharing fleet entirely electric by 2030. Uber has already expanded its Comfort Electric service to prepare for the change. This service was launched in several cities last May, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Diego and Dubai. These cities were chosen because they share one thing in common: the availability of charging stations. There are many of them. Tesla currently operates around 300 Supercharging stations in California. Lyft also previously announced its fleet will go entirely EV by 2030.
